Spoofing

Spoofing is a term used to describe a deceptive scheme or forgery. While a spoof may also refer to a humourous parody or a funny prank, in the crime-fighting community spoofing has come to stand for a serious form of phony effrontery in which a perpetrator attempts to swindle victims by leading them to believe he is someone or something he is not.

Due to the ease with which most persons or companies may be misrepresented on the Internet, much of the fraudulent activity identified as spoofing occurs online. For instance, a spoofed e-mail may contain a virus that may crash your hard drive, or a spoofed website may be set up for purposes of stealing the credit card details of unsuspecting consumers. Today, the most common form of online spoofing is e-mail spoofing, which involves the sending of fraudulent e-mail messages designed to appear as if they have come from a legitimate source.

About Spoofing

Email spoofing is popular amongst spammers who do not wish to have their real email addresses displayed in the emails they send. Because the spam messages have web links in them, it does not matter whether the recipient replies or sends an email to the wrong destination. Moreover, by hiding their addresses, email spoofing makes it harder for ISPs to track down the spammers and close down their accounts.

IP spoofing is another common form of spoofing which involves online camouflage whereby the attacker gains unauthorized access to your computer or computer network, and then they make it appear as if a malicious message has been sent by a trusted machine, by spoofing the IP address of that machine. IP spoofing also involves the creation of internet protocol IP packets using forged source IP addresses in order to conceal the identity of the sender.

Caller ID spoofing is the changing of a caller ID in order to display any desired number on the caller ID display of the recipient. Caller ID spoofing may often involve malicious motive on the part of the caller which is enabled by causing the recipientís caller ID to display any number they choose.

DNS spoofing is the term used to describe a situation in which a DNS server accepts and uses incorrect information from a host which is not authorized to give such information. This is malicious cache poisoning whereby forged data is placed in the cache of the name servers thereby resulting in serious security lapses, such as internet users being directed to the wrong website or emails being routed to non-authorized mail servers.
